An alcoholic beverage is a drink containing ethanol, commonly known as alcohol. Alcoholic beverages are divided into three general classes: beers, wines, and spirits. It is made by fermenting different ingredients.
Fermenting is when yeast acts on the sugar in these ingredients and creates alcohol.
Some key ingredients for fermentation and the alcoholic drinks they make are:
Grapes: As we all particularly know, Grapes are used in the production of grape wine.
Brandy is a spirit made by distilling grapes to a higher proof than they achieve as wine.
Vodka: Potatoes have been used to make vodka and also grains are used to produce the high grade vodka.
Whisky and beer: The grains are also the major ingredients in beer and whisky. Beer is usually made from barley, whereas whisky is a blend of distinctive kinds of grains.
Rum: Ingredients used in Rum is sugar in a major content.
Distinctive alcoholic beverages differ in terms of their aging process like beer that undergoes a process of short fermentation, lasts for about a week or so.
On the contrary, wine, which involves a longer process of fermentation, has a long aging period, lasting many months or even years.
Alcohol is absorbed through the walls of the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream where is it carried to the rest of the body, including the liver and the brain.
Alcohol itself has no vitamins or minerals. Therefore, the higher the alcohol contents of a drink, the lower the amount of available nutrients.
