Feeling upset is a common part of life. Such feelings result from how we interpret and react to certain situations.  It can be a result of or a combination of biological, psychological, genetic, social and environmental factors.  It can be hugely difficult to cope up with the conflicting things and being unable to do so may have you feel dejected and upset.

What triggers this feeling?

Most commonly, being upset can be because we feel threatened or attacked, frustrated or powerless, being invalidated or treated unfairly or feel that people are not respecting our feelings or possessions. Your childhood and upbringing also play a part where you may have suppressed your anger and depression and it caused a long-term problem. For many others, their past and also current situations get them flustered and upset.

What to do when you feel upset?

You do not have the ability to control the situations and happenings around you. However, you do possess, control over one thing: the way you choose to behave and react to these challenges. It is quite easy to get overwhelmed by powerful feelings. In such cases, some quick tricks can come to your rescue.

  • Identify the thoughts underlying your upset- Everyone has their own triggers for what makes them sad and feel low. Identify them and work on overcoming it. Think of happy moments in such situations and let the negative emotions pass.
  • Listen to calming music-While this may seem like inconsequential advice, music and the science behind it can be mesmerizing. Synchronize your heart beat with the beat of the music by looking for a with about 60 beats per minute. This may induce a calm and relaxed state.
  • Surround yourself around the people you love- Feelings of being upset can be diminished if you are around people who care for you and make you happy. They will talk you through your feelings and help you eliminate all your stresses.
