If you are having difficulty coping with life you are definitely not alone. Your ability to cope with life's ups and downs depends on how well you are mentally equipped to deal with them. Even the toughest people will, at sometime in their lives, suffer from some sort of mental downturn.
We tend to be very sensitive by nature and many things can make us succumb to stress, depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, there is still a certain amount of stigma attached to mental health issues.
If you break a limb, have a cold or fall ill with some other physical disease you are a lot more likely to talk to others about your illness than if you are feeling low and mentally challenged. When your mental wellbeing is compromised and you are feeling down you often see it as a sign of weakness and something you don't want to admit to. However, do not ignore these feelings. They should be taken seriously and if they ever threaten to overwhelm you then you should talk to a doctor or other health professional.
What is it that gives you the mental wellbeing and strength to deal with life and all it throws at you? It is thought that hereditary factors play a big part. Your experiences in life and your environment are also very important. If you are happy and content with your life and your surroundings then you are likely to feel more confident within yourself. Conversely, if your life has somehow gone a bit off track or you are miserable in your environment your mental wellbeing is likely to suffer as a result.
If you feel you need to strengthen your mental wellbeing here are a few steps you can take to help achieve this:
Talking is important. So often people bottle up their emotions and hide their deepest thoughts, especially when feeling low and unable to cope. Sometimes all you need is to share your feelings with a friend or someone who may be able to understand and offer you solutions.
Prioritize- try to focus on your priorities but, whilst concentrating on the most important tasks, ensure that you also make time for social activities such as sports or a hobbies as they will help to boost your mental wellbeing.
Take stock - from time to time take a reality check and reassess your life. Think about where you have come from, where you are now and where you would ideally like to be. Give some thought to whether you have taken on too much and, if so, be prepared to cut down on your schedule. Sometimes people try to bury themselves in a heavy schedule in order to forget their problems but this is not advisable as it can be a self defeating strategy.

List your goals so you have a clear view of where you want your life to take you and make a plan of how to achieve those goals.
Balance - balance is one of the most important factors in achieving and maintaining good mental strength and wellbeing. A healthy life balance is when all the important parts of your life are working together in harmony. Everyone has a different concept of balance and, as you go through different phases of your life, your sense of balance will change, along with your priorities.

The secret to finding the right balance for you is to remain in control of yourself and your goals and to keep moving forward towards those goals.
Sometimes it is easy to lose sight of what will truly make you happy. This can be due in part to social pressures from family and friends and also the huge pressures we face today from television, the internet and the mass media to conform to their perceptions of the perfect body and lifestyle.
In truth, only you know what is best for you. Try to maintain a positive mind and learn to trust your instincts. Listen to your inner voice and take note of what it is telling you. Never undervalue the importance of balance in your life as getting this right will improve your quality of life and your mental wellbeing more than you can imagine.
