As the economy improves, more companies are promoting from within. In this article we are going to address the question; “Can soft skills help you get promoted?” We all know that hard work, quality performance and meeting deadlines are essential in getting promotions, but what can you do to get noticed? The best way to do this is to improve your soft skills.

Wikipedia defines soft skills as “personal attributes that enhance an individual's interactions, job performance and career prospects. Unlike hard skills, which are about a person's skill set and ability to perform a certain type of task or activity, soft skills relate to a person's ability to interact effectively with coworkers and customers and are broadly applicable both in and outside the workplace.”

So let’s look at three soft skills that can help you get promoted.

1- Be An Excellent Communicator
Every successful business person excels at communications, both verbal and written. Written communications should always be brief, to the point and include any background data needed to explain the situation. In verbal communications, avoid using a lot of metaphors that may confuse the listener. Be sure to speak loudly and distinctively. Look the person in the eyes when you are talking and put a positive emphasis in your voice. Every successful business person excels at communications, both verbal and written. 2- Embrace “Positive Speak”
The term positive speak means to always have a positive attitude and reflect in you speech. Always be a problem solver and not a problem creator. Nobody like to work will a “negative Nellie” who is always complaining about something or coming up with reasons why something cannot be done. Management wants people who are positive and speak in a positive manner supporting the organization.

3- Be Proactive
It is important that you are always proactive and looking ahead. Management loves staff that can look ahead and determine the next few steps that must be taken before someone has to ask. BY being proactive, you can help anticipate problems and start working on solutions as early as possible.
