What causes age spots is a question that many of us who are beginning to slowly show the signs of aging sometimes ask ourselves. Until a couple of years ago I didn't know that it was possible to get rid of them. It was only as I have undertaken research that I now know more about them.
I have always known that age spots are caused by the melanocytes cells in the skin becoming larger while at the same time decreasing in number. Hence the blotchy appearance and uneven skin tone colour.
What causes age spots however is the fact that the skin, where the liver spots appear, hasn't been covered up when in the sun. This becomes really apparent if you were to look at a part of your body that you don't expose to the sun and one of the differences you will notice, apart from texture is that there are no age spots.
So the easiest way to avoid getting them is to make sure that you keep your skin covered and protected from UVA & UVB rays. Apart from age spots the sun really dries out your skin like a prune unless you keep it well moisturized.
If you fancy, you can always have cryotherapy to remove your liver spots. This is done by a skin specialist who dries freezes the age spot so that those cells die. As new cells rise to the surface of the skin they do so without any liver spots and then the old skin containing the age spot is peeled off.
Now although this may sound like a good idea if you have a lot of age spots that need removing then this treatment can become very expensive.
