There are times when you set goals but fail miserably when it comes to achieving them. It is not that goal setting does not work but most people fail to achieve their goals because they have either not used an effective goal setting technique or are not determined enough to achieve their goals.

Therefore, if you want to make your goals a reality, you must put in 100% commitment to your dreams and treat them seriously. Here are some of the most efficient goals setting techniques that could help you in your journey to success.

1. Set SMART goals.

This is the most popular goal setting technique in which you define your goals as:

S- Specific

M- Measurable

A-Acceptable

R- Realistic

T- Time Bound

Specific

An effective way of setting goals for success is to make your goals as specific as possible. Your goals should be clear and precise. In addition, they should also be very simple and realistic. Your goals should focus on exactly what you want to achieve.

Measurable

While setting your goals, you need to be confident that you can handle them. You cannot tell whether you achieved your goals or not if you cannot measure them. Therefore, your goals should be measurable and you must keep a track of your progress. You should have a valid form of measurement or criterion to measure your progress.

Attainable

Make your goals as realistic and achievable as possible. Goals that you set for yourself should be challenging but realistic and must not exceed your potential. If the goals are impossible to accomplish they can have a negative effect and lead to discouragement and frustration.

Relevant

Set a relevant goal. You must arrange your goals on the basis of their importance and immediate relevance. You must clearly demarcate your immediate goals from the long-term ones. By doing this, you will learn to set your priorities and do important things first.

Time Bound

Set an exact time limit for achieving your goal. You can do this by performing an analysis of goal by writing and marking an approximate date for achieving that goal. Also, review your progress on a regular basis by assessing whether the objective has been achieved or not and the causes of failure.

2. Share your goals with people around you.

The first step you need to do immediately after you have written your goals is to tell everyone about it. By doing this, you make a commitment to your goals because you know that now if you fail, you are going to bring yourself down in the eyes of your friends, colleagues and family and be a laughing stock. This realization makes you strive harder to achieve your goals. Therefore, sharing your future plans and aspirations in life is the fundamental step towards achieving your dreams.

3. Take Action.

You must take at least 3 steps that will lead you towards your goals daily. No matter how busy you are, make sure you spend time doing what you are supposed to do for bringing you closer to your aim. This is the true secret of the effective implementation of goal setting technique. You will never generate any results if you do not take action. Success is about doing things and taking the necessary steps.

4. Use Reward and Punishment System.

The fourth technique is to use reward and punishment system to help you be on track and at the same time remain enthusiastic. Reward yourself when you reach your goals and punish yourself whenever you procrastinate your tasks. For example, you can punish yourself by staying up late in order to complete your work before going to sleep and you can reward yourself with a movie or a meal right after you make an accomplishment towards achieving your goals.

These are some of the effective goal setting techniques that never fail. If you follow these techniques you are sure to get closer to your goal in a more convenient manner than otherwise.
