Secret of Laughter

Not surprisingly, there are countless advantages to laughing.

Did you know that a few recent experiments suggest that laughing can prevent you from craving that unhealthy food? Instead of a coke, search for a joke!

Now, more than ever, stress levels are high worldwide. One of the benefits of laughter is that it reduces stress.

There are chemicals in the body that induce stress. Laughter is thought to reduce stress-causing hormones in our body. One such example is cortisol. It also produces more endorphins. Laughter may actually be the best medicine: studies show that it can boost our immune systems as well. What does this mean? It means with each laugh, we can get a healthier body and a stronger immune system and less stress.

Many people say they need sexual intercourse, others say they need a good cry or a solid laugh. I'm sure you've felt a rush after a great laugh at some time in your life. Laughter provides an effective physical--and chemical release. If you need a good laugh, I suggest hanging around someone who makes you laugh, or even simpler--look at some silly videos online or something of the sort.

Maybe the easiest abdominal workout? A hard laugh. Laughter contracts the diaphragm, increases blood flow to your organs and muscles, and is actually a decent, healthful workout.

Back to busting stress, laughing can be a great distraction to get your mind off of your negative or woeful feelings. Laughter is also associated with positivity. When you laugh, you seem to become present in the moment and seemingly forget about your stresses and problems.

Let me give you a personal example. I am a currently teaching english in Korea. And the Korean people like to do things at the last possible moment. One time, exactly one minute before my class was to begin, they told me that my class had been changed and I was to see twice as many students as normal. I had literally one minute to get my materials together. So I just had to accept it and laugh. I think viewing the situation this way helped, because I was relaxed and taught the class very well.

Another benefit of laughing is that it connects us with others. There is nothing more beautiful than sharing a laugh with another human being.

To add more humor to your life, don't take things too seriously. Laugh at yourself or some situations that happened in your life. Take them in stride. Attitude is everything in this world. How many situations have you had in your life where you can "look back on them and laugh?" Hopefully a at least a few. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride that is "life." Because you only get one.
