We live in an era of obesity, plain and simple. Couches and television are made idolized, and people get less and less activity by the year. Althought public awareness is indeed growing on the issue, the actual action taken by the majority of unfit Americans is depressing. So, in an age when we can so easily turn on a radio, boot up facebook, or turn on a TV instead of doing many productive things, how does one get motivated to become healthy in modern society? I’m sure not going to pretend to have all the answers, but I offer these insights:
Strive for the Glory of Well-Being:
This may sound a bit odd, but trust me, this is very important. As much as chips and ice cream and McDonalds and your fav TV show sound attractive, you must learn to find fitness and health and the wonderful benefits therein even MORE attractive. And I guarantee you, if you are a couch potato now, once you get into a routine of exercise, you will absolutely love it. You will wonder how you could ever have “enjoyed” sitting on a couch watching TV all afternoon. Becoming a healthy person and maintaining that health enhances your body, your health, and your happiness. You body knows that you are healthy, and is happy because of it. Large amounts of endorphines (a chemical in your brain that tells your mind to be experience joy and be happy) shoot off when you are engaged in physical activity such as running, weightlifting, and sports.
Once you understand the great potential of body and mind that you have through exercise, it is like a drug, only with wonderful benefits and zero consequences.
Join Your Friends and Your Family
Exercising in a group is a fantastic way to get fit, especially for those who have not been previously in the habit. When you get together with a group of friends or family members and go play a few games of basketball or tennis or volleyball (or whatever you want!), you so often do not even realize how much exercise you are getting, as your mind is focused on the competition of the game and your friends and family. Heck, it’s a great way of getting exercise even if you are used to getting exercise. Natural, free, fun weightloss methods like these are a true gift. If you get together with friends and family often to play sports and other physical recreational activity, you’re there already! Perhaps if you supplement that with going for a 20 minute run only once a week, you will be well on your way to being a healthy, happy, fit individual.
